Fall Planting In Arizona
August in Arizona is still hot and feels like not much can grow, especially if we do not receive monsoon rains. However, August is the time to prep the garden for fall planting. As the summer plants are being picked or are limping through the heat now is the time to determine what plants to keep, what plants to pull, and what plants should go to seed.
Refresh Your Soil
It is also time to refresh your soil. Many nutrients have been used up by the plants to survive the summer and the sun has baked the rest out of the soil. Add a fertilizer, mulch or compost to your garden to add nutrients back into the soil.
Clean Up Old Plants
If you are removing plants, you can cut them at the base without removing the roots to save soil and also allow the roots to decompose providing more nutrients in the soil. When the roots decompose it helps aerate the soil leaving channels where the roots once grew.
